Guest Post with Author Katee Robert and Giveaway

New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Katee Robert learned to tell her stories at her grandpa’s knee. Her 2015 title, The Marriage Contract, was a RITA finalist, and RT Book Reviews named it 'a compulsively readable book with just the right amount of suspense and tension."  When not writing sexy contemporary and romantic suspense, she spends her time playing imaginary games with her children, driving her husband batty with what-if questions, and planning for the inevitable zombie apocalypse.

When I was in the beginning planning stages for The Devil’s Daughter, I knew several things--I knew that there was a cult in small town Montana, I knew there was a serial killer connected with the cult, and I knew that the cult was led by a woman--and the heroine was her daughter.

It sounds all well and good, but I didn’t want to use a cult that already existed, and there was the added dynamic of being led by a woman. It’s not unheard of in real life, but it’s definitely more rare than cults led by men. The belief system had to reflect this, and so I started researching various ideas that I could implement and that would make sense in the structure of the story I was trying to tell.

What I ended up deciding on was a Demeter-Persephone cult. It mirrored the relationship with the heroine, Eden, and her mother, Martha, so perfectly. Traditionally speaking, when the story of Hades stealing Persephone is told, Demeter is the innocent party, Hades is the villain, and Persephone only wants to return to her mother. This is the belief system that Martha plays up, and when Eden flees the cult at the age eighteen, it sets the stage for her to playing grieving mother who only wants her daughter to be returned to her.

Eden, naturally, sees things a bit differently. As daughter of a cult leader, she’s got an inside view of how things work. Her mother isn’t a true believer, and Eden is very aware of the way she manipulates people. It’s a source of conflict because those very skills that she learned by watching her mother are part of what makes her such a formidable FBI agent.

But even when Eden was young, she always saw Hades as a savior of sorts. After all, what kind of monster must Demeter be that she made the entire world suffer alongside her?

Growing up in a small town isn’t easy, especially when you’re the daughter of a local cult leader. Ten years ago, Eden Collins left Clear Springs, Montana, and never once looked back. But when the bodies of murdered young women surface, their corpses violated and marked with tattoos worn by her mother’s followers, Eden, now an FBI agent, can’t turn a blind eye. To catch the killer, she’s going to have to return to the fold.

Sheriff Zach Owens isn’t comfortable putting Eden in danger, even if she is an elite agent. And he certainly wasn’t expecting to be so attracted to her. As calm and cool as she appears, he knows this can’t be a happy homecoming. Zach wants to protect her—from her mother, the cult, and the evil that lurks behind its locked gates. But Eden is his only key to the tight-lipped group, and she may just be closer to the killer than either one of them suspects…
